tactile femme – Diagram 6 by Lisa J. Murphy

A red fimo and sculpey mix, creating a sculpture of a woman’s inner thigh area. This diagram is not yet included in my project. I finished it eons ago, and forgot to add it. The Braille will read ” Her hand reaches further down between her legs and her middle finger enters her anus”.

tactile femme sculpture by Lisa J. Murphy

tactile femme is a project I completed in 2019.  The following image is a clay sculpture of a woman’s inner thighs, her clitoris, labia & anus.  Wire mesh is used for pubic hair. The mesh has a great texture.

tactile cordage – A drawing by Lisa J. Murphy

A great example of my stellar drawing skills (not!). Usually I photograph my subjects, so this was an entirely new pandemic experience for me. This is image 2. I ended up using the bit of sculpture picture as the title for my web page, but not without posting this one first. It is just pencil on plain white paper. I drew it sitting at my backyard patio table.

So I turned this image on its side to post, just for kicks. It is a sculpture of a woman on all fours, with a saddle on her back, a blindfold on her eyes, and a bit in her mouth. Materials used are fimo, sculpey, cereal box cardboard, netting, twine, ribbon, and a small metal loop.

tactile cordage: woman wearing a gas mask

A photograph of the sculpture I made for image 3. It is a naked woman wearing a gas mask with her arms and legs tied to points out of view. I used fimo, sculpey, cardboard, twine, mesh, carpet tape & ribbon to create this work. It is mounted on a piece of Braille paper, ready for the thermoform machine.

About ‘tactile cordage’ by Lisa J. Murphy

I just finished a new project (March 2021) named tactile cordage. This work consists of 5 tactile thermoform images of Women in Rope, with grade-one Unified English Braille accompaniment. Because of Covid-19, I drew the images to sculpt from, rather than photograph people.

Purchasing during COVID-19

Tactile Mind Studio Limited uses thermoform plastic for tactile images and Braille descriptions. This is a very sturdy material and pages can be sprayed and gently wiped with disinfectant. tactile mind book and tactile atelier bookmark both have paper accompaniments which can be held back and mailed (at no extra expense) when the pandemic passes.

A bit about how the media chaos started for TACTILE MIND

For anyone who’s following my blog post on twitter – please see my (Lisa J. Murphy/tactile mind) blog post at www.tactilemindbook.com for full story. For those with a vision impairment link is on right of screen under “pages”. Click on  “updates blog”. This story will be top of page (most recent first). Just going back in time from my last post…occasionally over the past 2 years, I had sent out emails about tactile mind: A book of nude photographs for the blind/vision impaired to various local press telling them to check out my site. Unfortunately shooting white plastic can be difficult, and the pictures on my site had been difficult to read. By sheer luck, about a month ago now, I had managed to take some great pictures of the pages of my book (natural daylight) in front of my kitchen window. Out went the emails again. I received a phone call from Sarah Barmak (who I believe was an intern) at the Toronto Star.
We did a phone interview as I made my way up Spadina Ave., through Chinatown on a busy Friday afternoon, on my way to my restaurant job. Due to over staffing at the restaurant, I received the night off, and went home and emailed Sarah a picture of Diagram 2/ Man in Arctic Mask to illustrate her article.

This article came out 2 days later in the Sunday Toronto Star. I picked up a couple copies of the paper on the way to the gym, and spent the day doing garden work,  and chatting with my neighbour.

The next morning I had a early doctors’ appointment and when I got off the subway at the Dufferin station, The Daily Telegraph (London, U.K) called for an interview. The gentleman was very nice and informed me that pictures of my work had made it into all media throughout Britain. OK. I then got on the Dufferin bus and CBS called for a live interview. Nothing like being on public transit and having CBS call. I had to get them to call me back, and hoofed it home.
